Georgian Prime Minister Reacts to Sanctions on Businessman
The US Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of Georgia’s ruling party. However, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze says this changes nothing.
According to Kobakhidze, Ivanishvili was already under “de facto” sanctions, which meant he had been restricted in some way without being officially sanctioned. The prime minister claims that these informal sanctions were used as a tool for blackmailing Ivanishvili into doing what the US wanted.
Kobakhidze says that Ivanishvili was willing to stand up for Georgia’s national interests, even if it meant facing sanctions. He believes that this has actually earned Ivanishvili an “award” of sorts, rather than a punishment.
The prime minister also claims that the opposition in Georgia will not be affected by these sanctions. He says that everything remains the same and that the US has simply lost its tool for blackmailing Ivanishvili.
