Georgian Prime Minister Criticizes Journalist’s Actions
The Georgian prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, has spoken out against journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli. She is the founder of two news websites and has been on a hunger strike for 28 days.
Kobakhidze said that Amaghlobeli and her colleagues have not shown any remorse for slapping a police chief in Batumi. He believes this action was wrong and required a response from the state.
The prime minister also criticized international responses to Amaghlobeli’s case. He said that claims she is imprisoned for freedom of expression are “shameful lies.” Kobakhidze thinks that people should think twice before making such statements, especially when they involve slapping a police officer in the face.
Mzia Amaghlobeli was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer. She faces a prison sentence of four to seven years if convicted.
