Georgian Prime Minister Explains Situation to Council of Europe Chief
The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, has met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset. During their meeting, Kobakhidze explained that some people are being held in detention due to violent acts committed during recent protests.
According to Kobakhidze, these individuals have been detained under administrative law. He noted that the maximum term for such detentions is 15 days, and therefore, by the end of the month, all those currently being held will be released. This does not apply to people who are in pre-trial detention on criminal charges.
Kobakhidze also informed Berset that recent protests in Georgia have become peaceful, which means there is no longer a need for police intervention. He stated that this peaceful atmosphere is expected to continue over the coming days and weeks.
The Prime Minister assured Berset that investigations into the situation would be conducted from both sides, and provided clarifications on the issue of administrative detention and pre-trial detention under criminal charges.
Kobakhidze expressed Georgia’s readiness to cooperate with all Council of Europe structures on these issues.
