Georgia’s Civil Servants Face Mass Dismissals, ISFED Says.
The International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED) is worried about the mass dismissal of more than 50 civil servants in Georgia. The organization believes that these dismissals are politically motivated and targets people who have spoken out in favor of European integration.
Many of those dismissed had publicly expressed their support for Article 78 of the Georgian Constitution, which talks about joining the EU and NATO. ISFED says that this is not a coincidence. The group claims that the real reason behind the dismissals is political persecution and discrimination.
The dismissals have been happening without any clear explanation or proper procedure. In some cases, it’s even related to the political activities of their family members. This has affected employees from both central and local state institutions.
ISFED thinks that the new law on public service, which was passed in December 2024, is making things worse. The group believes that this law gives more power to the Georgian Dream party over the public sector, making it harder for civil servants to do their jobs independently.
Critics are also concerned that this law goes against international labor rules and lets politicians interfere with the civil service. This could lead to a breakdown in public institutions.
ISFED plans to take action and file a lawsuit in court to protect the rights of those affected by the dismissals.
