The Times of Israel reports that Israel’s Security Cabinet, the committee of Ministers legally empowered to take war decisions, meets to discuss the next step in the Gaza operation.
The Hebrew edition reports that some ministers are planning to call for a rapid end to the fighting.
BBC reported that Israel’s security cabinet met to discuss the next steps in the face of increasing international calls for a truce with Hamas – the Palestinian militant group which rules the Gaza Strip.
The article states that “Defense officials have warned against continued violence, which could lead to a wider conflict with more casualties and a risk of a ground-based offensive.”
Gaza was struck by Israeli airstrikes in the early hours of Sunday.
“Health officials in the area say that 26 people, including 8 children, died in attacks shortly before dawn. This brings the total number of deaths in Gaza to 174 since the conflict began last week. Israel has reported 10 fatalities,” reports the BBC.
On Saturday morning, US President Joe Biden called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abubas as the Israel-Hamas war continued to rage, and a tower block housing news media organizations was destroyed.
Medical officials reported that Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City on Saturday flattened three buildings, killing at least 23 people. Gaza Health Ministry reported that another 50 people were injured in the attack. Rescuers raced to recover bodies and survivors from the rubble. (Input by The Associated Press).
Biden’s call with Netanyahu was a “strong support” of Israel’s right of self-defense against rocket attacks from “Hamas and terrorist groups,” while also expressing his concern about the deadly flare-up on both sides.
The White House released a statement that said, “He condemned the indiscriminate attacks on towns and cities throughout Israel.”
Biden has also expressed concern about the safety and security of journalists, after Israeli airstrikes destroyed a building in Gaza that housed The Associated Press as well as other international media outlets on Saturday.
