**Israeli Soldier Jailed for Abusing Palestinian Detainees**
A Israeli soldier has been sentenced to seven months in prison for abusing Palestinian detainees in Gaza. The soldier, a reservist, was found guilty of using his weapon and punching the detainees while they were handcuffed or blindfolded.
The Beit Lid Military Court heard that the soldier had admitted to three counts of aggravated abuse and one count of unbecoming conduct as part of a deal with prosecutors. It also emerged that other masked soldiers were involved in four separate incidents of abuse between January and June 2024.
This is not an isolated incident. In recent months, there have been allegations of widespread abuse and torture of Palestinian detainees by Israeli soldiers. The United Nations has investigated these claims and found evidence of physical, psychological, and sexual violence against thousands of child and adult detainees.
The Israeli government has denied these allegations and claimed to be fully committed to international legal standards. However, it is clear that more needs to be done to prevent such abuse in the future.
**Background**
The conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023, when a cross-border attack killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Since then, over 47,550 Palestinians have died in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Many more are being held in Israeli prisons as “unlawful fighters”.
