The Palestinian Red Crescent reports that at least 28 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school in central Gaza Strip housing displaced families.
The medical organisation reported that the attack on the school Rufaida al-Aslamia, which is located near its headquarters in Deir al-Balah, injured more than 50 other people.
A video of the scene showed people running towards the injured in a cloud smoke and dust. Meanwhile, several children were being treated at the al-Aqsa local hospital.
The Israeli military claimed that the “precise strike” targeted Hamas militants who were operating inside a school’s “command-and control centre”.
Hamas has denied the claim that it deliberately abuses civilian infrastructure.
Gaza’s Hamas health ministry put the death toll also at 28 and condemned what it called a ‘new massacre’ by the Israeli military.
Since the Gaza war began a year ago, many schools have been converted into shelters to house the 1.9 millions Palestinians who fled their homes.
The Israeli military launched an offensive to destroy Hamas as a response to the group’s unprecedented attack against southern Israel on 7th October 2023. In that attack, approximately 1,200 people died and 251 were taken hostage.
According to the health ministry of Gaza, more than 42,060 deaths have occurred in Gaza since that time.
