Russian Forces Make Progress in Western Donetsk, but Quick Encirclement Unlikely
Russian forces are making steady progress in western Donetsk, a region of Ukraine. They have taken control of some areas and are trying to capture more.
Recently, Russian forces captured the city of Vuhledar. This has helped them support their ongoing attacks in western Donetsk. They are now focusing on two other cities: Pokrovsk and Kurakhove.
Despite heavy losses, Russia is making gains using a tactic called “meat attack.” This means they are attacking directly, with many soldiers pushing forward at once. In some areas, Ukrainian forces are outnumbered 8 to 1 by Russian forces, leading to retreats.
Russian forces are trying to encircle Kurakhove from multiple directions. They are also working to level the frontline between Sontsivka, Shakhtarske, and Kurakhove. This means they want to create a stable front line in these areas.
After taking Vuhledar on October 1, Russian forces have advanced north and west of the city with some success. They have made small gains northeast of Vuhledar, near Antonivka and Katerynivka. However, it’s not confirmed if they have entered Yelizavetivka or moved further west along a highway.
Footage from November 10 shows Russian troops in fields east and south of the settlement of Dalne. They are maintaining their positions there. Although some Russian bloggers claim their forces have entered Dalne, this has not been confirmed.
Analysts think that if Russian forces advance into and west of Dalne, Ukrainian forces might withdraw from a pocket north-northeast of Vuhledar. This could allow Russian forces to move uncontested on the highway.
