North Korean Troops Fighting Alongside Russia in Ukraine

Reports from the and Ukraine confirm that soldiers are fighting alongside Russian forces in a region of Ukraine. This area, called Kursk Oblast, is currently experiencing military operations.

In October , it was reported that around 10,000 Korean troops were sent to Russia to help with military operations against Ukraine. The US and Ukrainian have now confirmed this information. They say the are trying to get economic support and military supplies from Russia in exchange their help.

US officials have said that they have seen North Korean soldiers moving into positions in recent days. However, they did not give a specific number of how many soldiers have been hurt or killed.

The Ukrainian President has accused Russian forces of trying to hide the presence of North Korean soldiers by burning the faces of dead soldiers and telling them not to show their faces during training. It is also believed that Russia may be disguising the North Koreans as soldiers from another region, called the Republic of Buryatia.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has analyzed this situation and believes that the Russian government’ strategy of not acknowledging the presence of North Korean troops serves a specific purpose. By keeping quiet about these fighters, Russia can keep its image intact by saying it does not need help from other countries to take back its territory.
