Russia’s military has made significant gains in southeastern Ukraine. Since September 2024, they have taken control of over 1,100 square kilometers of land.
This is a big change from the previous stalemate in the area. Russian forces have been advancing rapidly and have captured several settlements near Vuhledar and in the Velyka Novosilka area.
In just a few months, Russian forces have gained much more land than they did in all of 2023. In that year, they took control of about 387 square kilometers.
Ukrainian military observers say that Russian forces have captured several key towns, including Katerynivka, Yelizavetivka, Illinka, and possibly Romanivka.
