Russians made small gains in Kursk Oblast near Kupiansk and Kreminna; Ukrainians reclaimed their positions in Kharkiv Oblast near Toretsk.
According to the Institute for the Study of War’s November 4 assessment, Russian forces have gained new territory in multiple regions despite intensified fighting along the frontlines. Their primary efforts are concentrated in eastern Ukraine Donetsk Oblast. Ukraine reclaimed territory north of Kharkiv and near Donetsk Oblast Toretsk.
Despite heavy losses, Russia has been making gains despite repeated frontal attacks. On 30 October, Zelenskyy stated that Russian forces outnumbered Ukrainian troops by 8:1 at some points, forcing tactical retreats. OSINT project DeepState reported that Russia had captured Selydove on 31 October. However, Ukraine’s General Staff stated that the assaults were repelled.
ISW reported Russian advancements in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. This was particularly true west of the Ukrainian salient. Geolocated footage released the same day showed Ukrainian strikes on Russian forces in Novy Put, a small village southwest of Glushkovo, in Kursk Oblast. This indicated Russian progress in the region.
In the Kharkiv Oblast in northeastern Ukraine, Ukrainian forces are reported to have gained ground on the eastern side of the Travianske Reservoir west of Hlyboke despite persistent Russian operations nearby. Geolocated footage released on 4 November confirmed Ukrainian gains in this area.
Further south, ISW noted significant Russian advancements along the Kupiansk-Svatove-Kreminna line running along the line of Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts’ administrative border. Russian forces are moving west of Novoselivske and southeast of Kupiansk. They are also moving southeast of Yampolivka near Kreminna.
In Donetsk Oblast the Russian forces have gained ground on several fronts.
Geolocated footage shows that in the Toretsk Sector, Ukrainian forces are advancing along Molodizhna Street, which is located in northwestern Pivnichne. Ukrainian forces are said to have retaken positions in Nelipivka southwest of Toretsk. Additional reports confirmed on 4 November that Russian troops continued to advance near Pokrovsk. Troops from Russia’s 8th Tank Regiment launched mechanized assaults against Novooleksiivka southwest of Selydove and near Vyshneve.
Denis Pushilin, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, posted footage showing Russian forces advancing into western Novodmytrivka. They also reportedly took over the settlement of Hirnyk. In the direction of Vuhledar Russian troops raised the national flag at Shakhtarske to the northwest of Vuhledar as a sign that they had taken control.
The OSINT project DeepState announced on 5that, on 4 November, Russian troops captured Stepaniivka in Donetsk Oblast and advanced near Kurakhove Kolisnykivka Bohoyavlenka and Kreminna Balka as documented on their interactive map.
