ISW: Russians take three villages near Kurakhove; advance in Selydove, Ukrainians gain ground at Kursk Oblast

The Institute for the Study of reported on 21st October that had gained multiple territories in , while Ukrainian forces advanced into Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
Over the past year, Russia has focused on seizing Ukraine’s controlled areas in Donetsk Oblast. Major attacks have been repeated near Pokrovsk and Selydove as well as other towns. Russia uses frontal assault tactics to incur heavy losses, but continues to make progress.
ISW reports that Ukrainian forces advanced in western Novoivanovka in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, southeast of Korenevo. The institute noted that Russians tried to justify their slow advance in this area by “falsely framing it as uniquely challenging,” and a commander “Akhmat”, described it as the most challenging frontline area.
ISW confirmed Russian gains in multiple areas in the Donetsk-direction. Geolocated footage showed Russian troops advancing to Lysychanska street in northeastern Selydove while elements of 110th Motorized Rifle Brigade crossed the Vovcha River and reached Zelena street in central Zoryane.
ISW documented several successful Russian mechanized attacks southeast of Kurakhove. Geolocated footage of 20 October showed an enhanced company-sized mechanized involving 19 armored vehicle and four tanks north from . Additional footage from the 21st of October confirmed Russian advancements south of Katerynivka.
The think tank reported on the fact that Russian forces had likely seized Maksymilyanivka. Geolocated footage showed Russian presence in the dacha east of Kurakhove.
ISW also noted continued operations along the Kupiansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, where geolocated footage showed Ukrainian forces repelling a Russian platoon-sized mechanized assault east of Terny.
is located in the Donetsk Oblast near the administrative border of the Luhansk Oblast. This makes it an important point for controlling the movement between the two Oblasts.
