The ISW identifies specific Russian military units operating in Kursk Oblast. These include elements of the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade, and the Alabai Reconnaissance Group.
The Institute for the Study of War reports that Ukrainian forces have advanced north of Sudzha during ongoing fighting in Ukraine‘s main salient, in Kursk Oblast, on October 20.
Ukrainian forces launched their offensive against Russia’s Kursk Oblast, on 6 August. They reportedly wanted to destabilize Russian defences by forcing them away from critical fronts within Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces are said to have seized around 1,300 square kilometers (500 sq miles). According to a previous ISW report Russian troops intensified their counterattacks on the 10-11 October in the Kursk Oblast to push Ukrainian forces away before weather conditions deteriorated.
According to the ISW’s geolocated footage, published on 20th October, Ukrainian forces recently advanced east from Cherkassoye Porechnoye and north of Sudzha.
Russian sources claim their forces launched attacks near Malaya Loknya, north of Sudzha, and near Plekhovo, south of Sudzha. The same sources claim that Ukrainian forces launched attacks southeast of Korenevo, in the vicinity Kruglenkoye & Leonidovo.
A Kremlin-affiliated Russian blogger stated that the “information about Russian Forces seizing Plekhovo” is unconfirmed. This indicates uncertainty about the exact position of Russian forces in this area.
The ISW report indicates specific Russian units operating in the area.
According to the ISW, elements of the Russian 155th Naval Infantry Brigade are reportedly active near Zeleny Shlyakh, (southeast from Korenevo), while elements of the Alabai reconnaissance group are reportedly active in Kursk Oblast.
ISW reports that neither Ukrainian or Russian sources reported ground attacks in Glushkovsky Raion west of the main Ukrainian Salient in Kursk Oblast, on 20 October 20. This suggests that the fighting could be concentrated in certain areas of the oblast.
The ISW report gives a snapshot of current conditions in the Kursk Oblast. It highlights recent Ukrainian advances as well as the ongoing conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces in the region.
