The Russians have also advanced near Pokrovsk, and in Kursk Oblast.
The Institute for the Study of War published a report on 17 October that detailed recent military operations in Eastern Ukraine, which have resulted both in territorial changes for Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Over the past year, Russia has focused on seizing Ukraine’s controlled areas in Donetsk Oblast. Major attacks have been repeated near Pokrovsk and Selydove as well as other towns. Russia uses frontal assault tactics to incur heavy losses, but continues to make progress.
In Kursk Oblast Russian forces have advanced on the western side the Ukrainian salient. ISW reports that geolocated footage taken on 17 October shows Russian forces advancing south of Zelenyy shlyakh and southeast of Korenevo.
Along the Kupiansk-Svatove-Kreminna line in Kharkiv and Lihansk oblasts, intense fighting continues without confirmed changes to the frontline. Oleh Synehubov of the Kharkiv Oblast Military Administration reported that Russian forces had recently advanced within four kilometers of Kupiansk City. Ukrainian authorities are now evacuating civilians in Kupiansk, and the surrounding areas.
In Donetsk Oblast Russian forces have gained ground near Chasiv Yar. Geolocated footage shows that Russian troops advanced into eastern Chasiv Yar in a mechanized assault with a reinforced platoon. They are also reported to have advanced into the “Block-9”, a mine southeast of Chasiv Yar.
Geolocated footage taken on 15 October shows that Ukrainian forces have made some progress near Donetsk Toretsk. They have retaken positions in central Toretsk. Russian milbloggers, however, claim that their forces have advanced to a depth of 2.17 kilometers north of Niu York, Donetsk’s New York, south of Toretsk. This claim, however, lacks visual proof.
Both sides have made progress in the area around Pokrovsk. Geolocated footage shows Russian forces advancing in eastern Lysivka. They also captured a water treatment plant west of Novohrodivka and advanced along a windbreak south of Selydove. This seems to have been a part of a Russian mechanized attack that was the size of a small company. In contrast, Ukrainian forces have gained some ground near Mykolaivka east of Pokrovsk.
Geolocated footage taken on 11 October shows Russian forces making recent advances east of Kurakhove.
