**Italy Freezes Talks with SpaceX Over Starlink Access**
The Italian government has put its talks with SpaceX on hold, said Defense Minister Guido Crosetto in an interview. This decision comes after controversy surrounding Elon Musk‘s comments about Ukraine and Europe.
Musk, a US billionaire, has faced criticism from European officials for his remarks. They have also expressed concerns that Starlink access could be cut off in Ukraine. This led to a clash between Musk and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski over the legitimacy of these concerns.
The Italian government had explored the possibility of an agreement with SpaceX earlier this year, but opposition officials denounced the idea due to Musk’s comments on Ukraine. Now, Italy will focus on what is “useful and safe” for the country in its defense contracts.
Crosetto stated that negotiations are currently not being discussed, but may be considered again in the future when the controversy has calmed down.
**Background**
European officials have expressed concern that Starlink could cut off Ukraine’s access to its internet service. This is crucial to Ukraine’s battlefield communications. Musk denied that this was possible, stating that Starlink would “never turn off” its terminals in Ukraine.
The US had threatened to terminate Starlink service in order to pressure Kyiv to sign a minerals deal with Washington. However, Musk has continued to provide Starlink access to Ukraine despite the controversy surrounding his comments.
