**Tory MP Joins Ukrainian Military**
A former British MP is now serving in the Ukrainian military. Jack Lopresti, 55, was a Conservative MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke until he lost his seat last year.
Mr Lopresti has joined the International Legion of Ukraine, Defence Intelligence. He said it’s an honor to serve in the Ukrainian military and help the people of Ukraine.
**Background to the Conflict**
Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago, on 24 February 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Russia was intervening as self-defence, but not wanting to occupy Ukraine. However, this claim has been widely disputed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that since the invasion began, over 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed. He warned that if Putin wins in Ukraine, it could set a precedent for other dictators around the world to take control of other countries.
**Mr Lopresti’s Role**
As a volunteer with the International Legion of Ukraine, Mr Lopresti will be working on military duties as well as charity work and supporting veterans. He has previously served in the UK Army Reserve as a corporal.
Mr Lopresti recently joined a cross-party delegation to visit rehab centers, charities, and military leaders in Ukraine. The delegation aimed to show support for Ukraine’s people and government.
