Czech Republic Backs Statement on Georgia
The Czech Foreign Minister, Jan Lipavsky, has expressed support for a joint statement made by the Nordic and Baltic foreign ministers about the situation in Georgia.
Yesterday, these countries released a statement expressing serious concern over what is happening in Georgia. They called for a thorough investigation into irregularities during the country’s parliamentary elections on October 26th.
The statement also condemned violence against peaceful protesters, politicians, and media representatives. It even expressed worry about threats made towards President Zourabishvili.
As friends of Georgia and supporters of its people’s European aspirations, the Nordic and Baltic countries are worried that the country is becoming more divided. They urge the Georgian authorities to take steps to restore trust in democratic institutions, including implementing election recommendations from the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe).
Lipavsky says his country supports this statement.
