Japan’s Foreign Minister Visits Ukraine
Japan‘s foreign minister, Takeshi Iwaya, arrived in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on November 16. This visit shows that Japan supports Ukraine despite being under attack by Russia.
Iwaya will meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, later in the day. He might also talk to President Volodymyr Zelensky. This is an important meeting because it’s the first time a Japanese minister has visited Kyiv since Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba took office.
Japan is concerned about North Korea’s presence along Ukraine’s eastern border. The country is also worried that the United States might not provide as much support to Ukraine after President–elect Donald Trump’s election.
Ukraine will face a tough winter with temperatures dropping and Russian forces targeting energy infrastructure. Japan has already provided $6.3 billion in financial aid to help Ukraine during this difficult time.
Japan has been supporting Ukraine since Russia invaded the country. The two countries have worked together on several issues, including imposing sanctions on North Korea.
