**Georgian Diplomats’ Chances of Joining EU**
Jaroslav Kurfurst is a career diplomat. He used to be the Belgian ambassador. Now, he’s in charge of the European Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Kurfurst talked to Radio Free Europe about Georgia and its chances of joining the EU. He said that Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia have been given a chance to join. But, they must meet certain conditions first. For example, Ukraine has seven steps to take, while Georgia has 12.
Georgia’s problems are well-known. There are issues with democracy, government, and opposition. The country is very polarized. If Georgia wants to join the EU, it needs to change this situation.
Kurfurst said that legislation should not just be a declaration. It must also lead to real changes in the system. Georgia will have to decide when it’s ready, but until then, the EU won’t grant candidate status.
The Czech Republic is currently leading the EU. Jaroslav Kurfurst said that they are open to helping countries like Ukraine and Moldova who are willing to change. But, they expect the same from Georgia. They need real changes in the system, not just words.
Kurfurst also talked about Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine. He said that the Czech Republic is not letting Russian soldiers into their country. However, they are giving humanitarian visas to those who want to flee and are against the war.
Georgia has a chance to join the EU, but it needs to make real changes first. The country must focus on becoming more democratic and fair for all its citizens. If Georgia does this, it might be able to join the EU one day.
