J.D. Vance, Republican senator and vice presidential candidate, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was more of a “competitor”, or “adversary”, than an enemy to the U.S. Vance stated this in an interview on NBC News, Oct. 27.
Vance’s remarks come just a little over a week before the U.S. Presidential election, which has high stakes in the future of American support for Ukraine.
“I think he’s a clear adversary.” Vance replied to NBC News that he does not consider Putin as an ally.
“But I also think that we need to be smart with diplomacy.” We can have a conversation with someone even if we don’t like them.
Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has come under increased scrutiny due to recent allegations that he had multiple phone conversations with the Russian President after leaving the White House.
Trump has frequently praised his relationship with Putin during the campaign and blamed U.S. president Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for Russia’s invasion, without mentioning Putin. Zelensky has been called a “salesman”, who must “make a bargain” with Russia.
Vance continued to say that negotiations with Moscow were “a necessary part” in ending the war in Ukraine.
“I think that it’s important, if we ever want to end the conflict in Ukraine, we will have to engage at some level in some sort of negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and our NATO allies in Europe,” said he.
Vance did no detail any possible outcomes of these negotiations. However, he has previously stated that Trump’s peace plans could include the establishment of a “demilitarized” zone between Ukraine and Russia. This would presumably be similar to the current line de demarcation between both countries.
Zelensky said Vance’s plan was “too radical”, and he refused to accept plans that would end the war at Ukraine’s cost.
Vance has repeatedly said that he doesn’t “care about Ukraine,” even just days after Russia’s full scale invasion.
“I think he is clearly an opponent.” J.D., the Republican candidate for vice president, said that he is a competitor. Vance replied when asked if the Russian President Vladimir Putin was an enemy.
“These elections cannot recognized. This is the equivalent of recognizing Georgia’s submission to Russia. No one can take Georgia’s European Future away.”
HUR reported that Russian police officers stopped a Kamaz truck on the Kursk-Voronezh Highway on October 27. The truck had civilian license plates. The vehicle was reported to be loaded with North Korean soldiers.
