Republican Senator and Vice Presidential Candidate J.D. Vance questioned Ukraine’s importance to U.S. strategic interest on a recent podcast episode of “The Tim Dillon Show”, which aired Oct. 26.
Vance said that Ukraine was less important than other regions. He specifically mentioned Taiwan as the world’s largest producer of semiconductor chips.
“My entire argument with the Russia-Ukraine war is that Russia shouldn’t have invaded Ukraine. A lot of innocent people are killed… Our interest in peace. My view is that Ukraine is not as important to us than other regions in the world. Vance said, “I’m just putting my cards out there,” to Tim Dillon, a stand-up American comedian who questioned Vance about various topics, including foreign policy.
“If the Chinese took Taiwan over, it would be bad for us.”
Vance responded to a question about the origins of the conflict in Ukraine by asking: “Did American diplomatic efforts actually create conflict rather than diffuse conflict?” In my opinion, it did.”
Vance, who in July was chosen as Donald Trump’s running-mate, has been outspoken in his opposition to U.S. assistance for Ukraine. He has repeatedly said that he does not care about Ukraine, including just days after Russia’s full scale invasion.
The Washington Post reported that Vance, in a series of leaked texts with conspiracy theorist Charles Johnson and other far-right conspirators, also disparaged Ukraine and expressed his unwillingness to continue U.S. assistance.
Vance also rejected Vance’s notion that Russian President Vladimir Putin will extend his military operations outside Ukraine into Europe. He called the idea that Putin would march through Europe “absurd”, and expressed doubts about the likelihood that Putin would pursue goals beyond his current goals in Ukraine.
