US Vice President JD Vance spoke out about his cousin Nate’s service in Ukraine.
Nate Vance was a former US Marine who fought for Ukraine from 2022 to 2025. He belonged to the Da Vinci Wolves First Motorized Battalion, a volunteer unit that helped defend Ukraine against Russia.
JD Vance said he didn’t talk publicly about Nate’s service because he wanted to keep him safe. “I didn’t want to endanger his life more than it already was,” he told Fox News.
Nate Vance recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and criticized US policy on Ukraine. He also spoke out against JD Vance’s past comments, which Nate felt were not supportive of Ukraine.
JD Vance responded by saying he had no interest in arguing with his cousin publicly. However, he did take issue with Nate’s attempt to contact him through his Senate office instead of going through their family members, who JD Vance is close to.
Nate Vance left Ukraine shortly before the US presidential inauguration because he was afraid of being captured by Russian forces. He said it had become too complicated and risky for him to stay in Ukraine.
JD Vance has previously spoken out against Ukraine and President Zelensky, repeating some ideas that are similar to those of the Kremlin.
