South Carolina Congressman Urges US to Take Action Against Georgia‘s Government
A Republican congressman from South Carolina is calling on the incoming administration to take action against Georgia’s government. In a letter, Rep. Joe Wilson says the US should use its law enforcement mechanisms to stop Georgia from evading sanctions and engaging in other illicit activities.
The letter comes after the US imposed sanctions on Georgia’s former Prime Minister, Bidzina Ivanishvili. The US Treasury said Ivanishvili was undermining democracy in Georgia for the benefit of Russia. Congressman Wilson says this is a “significant step forward” and urges the administration to extend sanctions to Ivanishvili’s family members and associates.
Congressman Wilson chairs a commission that oversees human rights and security issues in Europe. He says the US should take action against Georgia’s government because it is not democratic. Wilson believes that if Georgia returns to democracy, it will be a blow to Russia’s influence.
