**Republicans Choose New Senate Leader**
On November 13, the Republican party in the US Senate elected Sen. John Thune of South Dakota as their new majority leader. He won with a vote of 29-24.
The Republicans took control of the Senate in the recent elections on November 5. They also won the House of Representatives and the White House.
Sen. Thune is part of the more established wing of the conservative party, not associated with President-elect Donald Trump. Despite this, he said that he is willing to work with Trump.
Thune will officially become the majority leader when the new Senate is sworn in on January 3, 2025. He has expressed support for Ukraine and wants to continue giving them US aid.
**A New Leader for Republicans**
Sen. Thune was elected despite opposition from some Republican leaders who are close to President Trump. They wanted Sen. Rick Scott of Florida to be the new majority leader.
Thune’s victory is seen as a way for the more established wing of the party to take control again. He has promised to work with the House of Representatives to pass laws.
“We are excited to reclaim the majority and to get to work with our colleagues in the House to enact President Trump’s agenda,” Thune said after his election.
