EU Official Says Ukraine and Georgia Different Cases
The EU’s top official for foreign affairs, Josep Borrell, said that Ukraine and Georgia are not similar cases. Both countries want to join the EU, but they need to make significant changes.
When asked about similarities between Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia, Borrell replied that he sees no connection between Ukraine and Georgia. He stated that Georgia was told it had strayed from its path towards EU membership and needed to change laws and correct issues before being considered for membership again.
However, this is not the case with Ukraine, according to Borrell. The president, government, and society in Ukraine all want to join the EU. In fact, Borrell said that Ukraine’s path towards EU membership is a strong guarantee of security for the country.
Borrell’s comments suggest that Ukraine has made progress on its path towards EU membership, while Georgia still needs to make significant changes before being considered again.
