**Judicial Independence at Risk**
A statement signed by 220 Serbian judges and prosecutors warns that the country’s president is undermining the independence of the judiciary.
President Aleksandar Vučić has said that prosecutors who don‘t follow his expectations will be replaced. This has been seen as a new low in the twelve-year process of taking control of the courts.
The statement says that President Vučić has been defaming and targeting judges and prosecutors who refused to go along with his plans for the judiciary. He is now openly saying that he wants to choose who becomes a prosecutor based on his own opinions.
This could set a bad example, say the signatories of the statement. They point out that if President Vučić doesn’t like what some prosecutors are doing today, tomorrow he might not like something another group does. This could affect judges, lawyers, and other citizens as well.
The statement says it’s time for those who have been silent about this to speak up and oppose such actions. So far, 220 judges and prosecutors have signed the statement, but more may follow.
