EU Officials Condemn Georgia’s Actions
High officials of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas and Marta Kos, have spoken out against the actions of the Georgian government. They claim that the country is moving further away from democratic standards.
The officials are concerned about changes to several laws in Georgia. These changes will limit the rights of citizens to express themselves freely, assemble peacefully, and receive information without fear of censorship. This, they say, will have serious negative consequences for the country’s development.
Kallas and Kos urge the Georgian government to stop these measures and wait for an opinion from a human rights organization called ODIHR. They also condemn the use of intimidation and violence against people who disagree with the government. A journalist named Mzia Amaglobeli is currently being held in jail after going on hunger strike.
The EU officials call on the Georgian government to release all unjustly detained individuals, including journalists and activists. They want the government to engage in dialogue with all political groups and civil society representatives. This will help restore trust between the government and its people.
Kallas and Kos also recommend that the Georgian government implement suggestions made by a human rights organization after the last elections in Georgia. The EU officials are ready to support any efforts towards making Georgia a democratic, stable, and European country.
