Georgian Journalist on Hunger Strike: EU Officials Speak Out
A statement from the European Commission‘s High Representative and Enlargement Commissioner has condemned the treatment of journalists in Georgia. The statement says that authorities are using intimidation tactics and violence to silence dissenting voices.
The case of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli is highlighted as an example of this behavior. She is currently on hunger strike after being detained. The EU officials say she is a symbol of courage for those who have been unjustly detained.
The statement calls for the responsible parties behind the violence to be held accountable. It also urges the Georgian authorities to release all journalists and activists who were detained unfairly.
The European Commission says it wants the authorities to start a dialogue with all political forces and representatives of civil society. The OSCE/ODIHR report on the latest elections should be implemented as soon as possible, according to the statement.
