Kakha Kaladze, the mayor of Tbilisi, has criticized attempts to impose uniformity in the European Union. He compared such actions to Soviet Union’s approach. Kaladze, in response to the recent EU Foreign Ministers‘ Meeting in Luxembourg questioned the value joining the EU when it requires conforming with a singular identity.
“Why is there a price in Europe?” There are many different cultures and traditions in each state. What does it matter whether it’s the Soviet Union, or the European Union? He asked.
Kaladze stressed that Georgia fought to gain its independence and doesn’t want to be a part of a system where countries were treated as identical, or forced to follow a similar path. “This attitude is unacceptable,” Kaladze said, expressing concern about the diversity that makes Europe unique being undermined by such pressures.
He emphasized that Georgia values freedom and independence and questioned whether the country’s experience in the Soviet Union would be different if it joined the EU under these conditions.
