Kakha Kaladze (Metropolitan of Tbilisi and Secretary General of “Georgian Dream”) denied allegations that citizens’ ID cards were confiscated ahead of the October 26, 2014 elections. She called the claims “nonsense” and “speculations”.
In response to questions from the media about reports that some citizens had their ID cards confiscated prior to the elections, Kaladze dismissed the accusations. He described them as false, and part of an attempt to create tension. He stressed that these claims were false, stating that “nothing happened” in relation to such actions.
Kaladze referred back to a recent OSCE/ODIHR interim report regarding the elections. He described it as “ideal”, and praised its reflection of a calm environment before the election. “Since 2012 Georgian Dream has been involved in elections and I can’t recall such a calm atmosphere before the election,” he said. He also claimed that those spreading rumors are trying to cause chaos and conflict.
He accused groups that promote these stories of spreading baseless allegations in an attempt to hide the positive assessment found in the OSCE/ODIHR reports. Kaladze dismissed the idea Georgian Dream had taken ID cards away from civil servants. He called it “usual speculation and nonsense.”
He said that the individuals or organizations spreading these rumors are dishonest, adding, “We know their identity, their past and the filthy they represent.”
