Mayor of Tbilisi Speaks Out on City Hall Employee’s Dismissal
The Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, has denied claims that a city employee was dismissed on political grounds. Giga Sofromadze, the former employee, had his contract expire and there was no need to extend it.
“This is just speculation,” said Kaladze. “His contract expired, and he wasn’t needed anymore.” The Mayor emphasized that employees in the City Hall were free to express their own opinions and views.
“We’ve never restricted anyone from expressing their political views,” said Kaladze. He pointed out that some city employees even attended protests and made public statements about politics.
One employee, a member of Nika Gvaramia‘s party, was allowed to continue working despite their differing views. The Mayor made it clear that individual opinions were acceptable, but collective bullying or pressure on colleagues was not.
“There is evidence of this,” said Kaladze. “Anyone can express their opinion, as long as they do it under their own name.”
