In an interview published by Tengrinews.kz on October 16, a government spokeswoman said that Kazakhstan’s President has “carefully” considered proposals to join BRICS, but Astana won’t seek to join “in the near future”.
BRICS is a grouping of emerging economies that includes Russia, China, India and Brazil.
“The president (Kassym Jomart Tokayev), has received proposals regarding Kazakhstan’s membership in BRICS. Berik Uali, presidential spokesperson and advisor, said that Kazakhstan is a respected and authoritative member of international community.
“However, Kazakhstan will not submit an application to BRICS at this time and most likely for the foreseeable future,” the spokesperson stated, citing “multi-stage application processes” and “development prospects” that were not specified.
Egypt, Ethiopia and Iran joined the international organization in 2024. This was the first expansion of the group since December 2010, when South Africa joined.
Tokayev plans to attend a BRICS Forum in Kazan, Russia on October 23-24 at the invitation of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, Kazakhstan has been walking on a tightrope.
Central Asia, while refusing to support Russian aggression, and stressing its independent role as a country, has become a key pathway for sanctions-related goods flowing to Russia.
Tokayev, who spoke alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Astana last month, expressed the belief that “Russia can’t be defeated in a military sense.”
Tokayev continued, “A further escalation in war will have irreparable consequences for all of humanity, and especially for the countries involved with the Russia-Ukraine Conflict.”
