**UK Prime Minister Seeks EU Support on Ukraine**
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to speak with European allies in an effort to reach a deal on Ukraine. His Defense Secretary, John Healey, has just returned from the US, where he met with his counterpart, Pete Hegseth.
Healey said that Hegseth had urged the UK to “step up” on defense spending and security for Europe. Healey replied that the UK was committed to doing so, saying “we have we are and we will further.”
**US Support for Ukraine in Jeopardy**
The US has paused military aid to Ukraine and is reviewing its relationship with the country. The US has also stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed concern about the US’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, saying that his country must be prepared if the US withdraws its support.
**EU Boosts Defense Spending**
In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, EU leaders have agreed to a massive boost in defense spending – €800 billion. This move is intended to help Ukraine protect itself and achieve lasting peace.
The UK and France are willing to provide peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, but they want security guarantees from the US before doing so.
**US President Avoids Committing to Support**
US President Donald Trump has avoided committing to supporting Ukraine with security guarantees. Instead, he suggested that American workers in Ukraine would be enough to deter Russia from further invading.
Russia has rejected this proposal, saying it amounts to “direct, official and unveiled involvement of Nato members in the war against Russia.”
**Talks to Resume Next Week**
Talks between the US and Ukraine aimed at reaching an agreement will take place next week in Saudi Arabia. The UK’s Defense Secretary expressed determination to play a big role in Europe and achieve lasting peace.
