**Ukrainian Soldier Receives Treatment in Kent**
A Ukrainian soldier named Dmytro has come to Kent for medical treatment after being injured in a Russian shell attack. He is one of the first Ukrainian soldiers to receive care from the NHS in England since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago.
Dmytro was a project manager in Kyiv before he signed up to fight for his country when the war started. He was serving on the front line in the Donetsk region when his unit came under attack last July. Two shells hit his hideout, and Dmytro was the only one who survived with severe injuries.
Dmytro had to undergo 23 operations and learn how to walk again after suffering nerve damage, a damaged knee, and hand injury. His wife, Maryna, spent hours on paperwork and months waiting for permission to bring her husband to the UK. She said that while they are happy to be together in their country when the war stops, she feels safer in the UK for now.
Dmytro is living with his wife and young daughter Diana in Kent, who came to the UK as refugees in 2022. Dmytro walks his daughter to school every morning, which he says is excellent physiotherapy for him. His daughter, Diana, is happy that her dad is living with them again.
Dmytro hopes to soon walk without crutches and plans to return home when he is well enough to help with the war effort.
