US Senate Passes MEGOBARI Act Without Changes
The US Senate has passed the MEGOBARI Act without any changes. This is according to Khatia Dekanoidze, a leader of the National Movement in Georgia.
What Does the Act Mean?
The act is an assignment for federal investigative bodies to study Russian and Chinese influences in Georgia. It also includes serious sanctions against people who oppose Georgia’s move towards Europe and those who fight for human rights.
Important Figures Affected
Bidzina Ivanishvili, a powerful figure in Georgian politics, is targeted by the act. Dekanoidze says that this makes him “the regime” in practice. The act also shows that the US stands with the people of Georgia, as stated by Senator Shaheen.
Response from the Opposition
The opposition, led by Mamuka Mdinaradze, has responded to the act by saying they might declare all parties unconstitutional. However, Dekanoidze believes this is just an attempt to fill the information field with propaganda and that nothing will change.
Bipartisan Support
Dekanoidze notes that the MEGOBARI Act has bipartisan support from the Republican Party. Without the Trump administration’s support, she says the act would not have been approved by the Senate.
