According to a report by NHK, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is preparing for his final trip to the United States before stepping down from office. During his four-day tour, Kishida is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The purpose of the meeting is for Kishida to reaffirm Japan’s support for Ukraine and its stance on maintaining sanctions against Russia. This comes as Zelenskyy prepares to attend the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, where he will present a “five-point victory plan” to American leadership.
Kishida’s itinerary also includes a face-to-face meeting with US President Joe Biden at his private residence in Delaware. He will also participate in a summit with the “Quad” group, which includes Japan, the United States, Australia, and India. The group is expected to discuss strengthening cooperation in maritime security in response to China’s growing threat.
During the Future Summit, held as part of the UN General Assembly, Kishida will call for UN reform, emphasize the importance of a rules-based international order, and promote efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons. However, the Ukrainian Presidential Office has not yet announced a meeting with Kishida.
Japan has been a significant supporter of Ukraine since the start of the war. They have provided over $12 billion in humanitarian, economic, and other assistance since the Russian invasion in 2014. In June, a security agreement was signed, with Japan committing to provide an additional $4.5 billion in 2024 and continue supporting Ukraine for the next ten years.
Last month, Kishida announced that he would not seek re-election as prime minister. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy’s US visit is expected to include meetings with both American presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
