Irakli Kobakhidze is the Chairman of Georgian Dream. He says that it is evident that President Salome Zurabishvili is backing down because she has realized that the appointment and dismissal ambassadors are not her core competence.
Kobakhidze claims that the administration of the president has spread false information about her appointing 12 ambassadors that the government had nominated in the past year, and that she has refused none.
Kobakhidze pointed out that, in June-July last year and this, the President didn’t sign the nomination of 5 ambassadors, or the recall of 1 ambassador, despite recommendations from the Government.
“We are talking facts. And the facts are that in June and July last year, three submissions were sent to the President by the Government regarding the nomination of ambassadors. To date, she has not responded. It’s been almost a year since the President refused to nominate them. The Presidential Administration spread incorrect information. Moreover, in this year, around 2-3 weeks ago, the government sent a request regarding the nomination of two ambassadors, and the recalling of one ambassador. In this case she refused directly in writing. It is documented that there was an official correspondence between President and Government. Therefore, it is unclear as to why the Presidential Administration spread inaccurate information. It is clear that the President misunderstood the scope of her authority in the appointment of ambassadors. Implementing foreign policy is solely the responsibility of the government. “When the President interferes with the implementation of foreign policy through her so-called arguments this also means that she has violated the Constitution,” Kobakhidze said.
According to the Administration of President of Georgia, all candidates nominated by Government for appointment as diplomats and international organizations were approved by the President during the past year.
