Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti has expressed concern over the potential consequences of a Russian victory in Ukraine. He warned that such an outcome could threaten the peace that has been maintained in the Balkans for the past 25 years. In an interview with The Associated Press on October 3rd in Warsaw, Poland, Kurti stressed the importance of Western unity in supporting Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression.
The relationship between Kosovo and Serbia remains tense, with EU-facilitated talks to normalize relations failing to make progress over the past 13 years. Serbia does not recognize Kosovo’s independence and considers it a part of its own territory. Despite this, Kosovo’s Foreign Minister Donika Gërvalla-Schwarz has stated that their support for Ukraine is unwavering, even though Ukraine does not recognize Kosovo’s independence.
Kurti believes that a stronger Russia could embolden Serbia and potentially endanger not only Kosovo, but also other countries in the region such as Bosnia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. He sees Serbia’s expansionist ambitions as a threat to these countries.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of the past 25 years of peace, freedom, and democracy in the Balkans. He stated that this period has been the most peaceful in the region’s history. In March, Kosovo’s Defense Minister Ejup Maqedonci pledged two military aid packages to Ukraine during the Ramstein–20 meeting in Germany. The first package, which included trucks, tactical and armored vehicles, was delivered within a week. The second package was focused on supplying mortar and artillery shells.
