Russia Watching US Moves on Greenland
Russia is closely watching the US after President-elect Donald Trump said the country might use military force to take control of Greenland. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made this comment on January 9.
Greenland is a Danish territory with American and Danish military bases, as well as rich mineral resources. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Greenland was “not for sale” and its future belonged to the people of Greenland.
Other European leaders also spoke out against Trump’s comments. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas defended the territorial integrity of Greenland. Peskov criticized their response, saying it was too timid.
Russia has been strengthening its presence in the Arctic region, which has led other countries to revise their security strategies there. The US and Canada have expressed concerns about Russia’s growing influence in the area.
Peskov said that Russia was interested in maintaining peace and stability in the Arctic zone. He emphasized that the situation was being closely watched.
Greenland is a strategic location due to its mineral wealth and military bases. The comments by Trump have raised tensions between the US and Denmark, as well as other European countries.
