The Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry denied a part of WP report that Ukraine had been informed of the call in advance. Trump‘s team has said that they do not comment on “private phone calls.”
The Washington Post reported on 11 November that Donald Trump, the US President-elect, and Russian President Vladimir Putin had spoken by phone about the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Putin, who in 2022 ordered the full-scale invasion after eight years of conflict in the east of the country, frames the war between a great Russia versus a declining west. Trump’s presidency will likely have an impact on Russia’s war against Ukraine. He calls for a quick end to the conflict, and questions Washington’s extensive assistance to Kyiv. Trump promised to end the conflict quickly during his campaign but did not give any details. His aides suggested that the conflict should be frozen de facto, which would allow Russia to reconstitute their forces and renew their offensive.
According to the Russian state funded news agency RIA Novosti Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov, The Washington Post reported that “there were no conversations” and “this is completely false.”
Peskov responded:
“There are still no concrete plans.”
The Washington Post reported that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry refuted a claim which claimed that Ukrainian officials were aware of the alleged conversation and did not object. Reuters cited a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Heorhii Tikhyi. He confirmed,
“Reports that Ukrainian officials were informed in advance about the purported conversation is false.” “Ukraine could not support or oppose this conversation.”
Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, has not confirmed the exchange. He told AFP in a statement that “We do no comment on private phone calls between President Trump, and other world leaders.”
Alleged Trump-Putin phone call
The Washington Post reported on 10 November that sources familiar with the call from 7 November claimed that President-elect Trump had spoken with President Putin about Ukraine. Trump advised Putin to avoid escalating war and noted the US military presence in Europe as deterrent. Trump expressed an interest in further talks to discuss “a quick resolution to Ukraine’s conflict.”
Sources indicate that Ukrainian officials were aware of this conversation and did not raise any objections. The report noted that Ukrainian officials also expected Trump to engage in diplomatic dialogue with Putin to address Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
