**Kremlin Says Ceasefire is Just a Tactic to Give Ukraine Time**
The Kremlin claims that calls for a ceasefire in Ukraine are actually an attempt by the Ukrainian military to regroup and rearm. This was stated by Vladimir Putin’s aide, Yuri Ushakov.
“We see this as an effort to provide Ukrainian forces with a pause during a difficult period,” Ushakov said. He added that Russia is advancing on all fronts and sees the ceasefire as a way for Ukraine to strengthen its position.
**US and Russia Discuss Ceasefire**
Ushakov also stated that Russia has conveyed its concerns to the United States and continues to communicate with them, but this does not include direct talks between the presidents. However, a meeting between President Trump and Vladimir Putin could be arranged quickly if necessary.
The US had proposed a 30-day ceasefire, which was accepted by Ukraine after negotiations in Saudi Arabia. But Russia wants guarantees that Ukraine will not mobilize troops or receive military assistance during the truce.
**Ukraine Doubtful of Russian Intentions**
Despite this, Ukraine remains doubtful that Russia would uphold a ceasefire agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said “We are preparing for Brussels” and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov is organizing the next meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group (UDCG).
**International Support for Ukraine**
Meanwhile, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed increasing pressure on Moscow, particularly by imposing additional sanctions against Russia’s banking sector. French President Emmanuel Macron also stated that “Ukraine is sovereign” and should be able to request allied forces to be on its territory.
A proposed contingent of around 10,000 troops, mostly provided by the UK and France, would assist with weapons, logistics, and intelligence support. Thirty-five countries would provide assistance.
**Latest Developments**
Serhii Shalaiev, a man accused of killing Ukrainian activist Demyan Hanul, pled guilty to the murder in a closed court hearing on March 16. Russian troops attacked Ukraine with 90 drones, targeting several regions.
U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow and met with Putin, who reportedly signaled his willingness to accept the US plan but insisted that any ceasefire must contribute to a long-term resolution of the war.
**Casualties Mount**
Russia’s military suffered over 1,400 casualties in just one day. The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported a complete retreat from Sudzha. Canada is proud to continue helping Ukraine repair its critical infrastructure.
