**Ukraine Invites EU Leaders to Counter Russia’s Victory Day Parade**
In a symbolic move, Ukraine has invited top European Union officials to visit Kyiv on May 9. This is an attempt by the Ukrainian government to counter Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s annual Victory Day parade in Moscow.
According to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the invitation was extended during a meeting with EU counterparts in Luxembourg. Sybiha called upon them to “show our unity and resolve in the face of the biggest aggression in Europe since the Second World War.” This move is seen as an attempt by Ukraine to draw attention away from Moscow’s annual military display, which comes more than three years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
**Countering Russia’s National Pride**
Russia’s Victory Day parade on May 9 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The celebrations in Moscow will feature large-scale military parades, patriotic concerts, and public displays of national pride, highlighting military triumph. In contrast, much of Europe observes the commemoration on May 8 with more subdued ceremonies.
By hosting EU leaders on May 9, Ukraine aims to create a sense of unity and resolve among European countries in the face of Russian aggression. This move is also seen as an attempt by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky‘s administration to counter Russia’s narrative of national pride and military triumph.
**Seeking Security Guarantees**
Separately, Sybiha announced that President Zelensky plans to host leaders from the “coalition of the willing” on May 9. This coalition consists of at least 37 countries, including several European, Asian, and Commonwealth nations. The group is discussing potential security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia.
Six countries are reportedly ready to commit troops, while others have been asked to provide intelligence, weapons, or naval support. However, it’s worth noting that the United States is not a member of this coalition.
**Russia Invites Foreign Leaders to Moscow**
Meanwhile, Russian state media reported that Putin has invited leaders from China, Israel, Brazil, Slovakia, and Serbia to attend the May 9 celebrations in Moscow. This move is seen as an attempt by Russia to showcase its international support for its military efforts.
**Ukraine’s Commitment to a Full Ceasefire**
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the United States, Ukrainian officials say that Russia continues to push maximalist demands and has shown little willingness to pursue a comprehensive peace deal. Ukraine maintains its commitment to a full ceasefire if Moscow agrees to reciprocate.
Until today, Russia has rejected the 30-day ceasefire suggested by US President Donald Trump. It remains to be seen whether this move will lead to a breakthrough in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
