The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has criticized Jared Leto for his remarks at a concert held in Belgrade, Serbia, on October 11.
Leto asked his audience during his performance if they had any Russians in their midst, and was greeted with screams.
The musician said he missed Russia, and that he would return once “all these issues are resolved,” referring to Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“We are going to return to Serbia. We will go up to St. Petersburg instead of Moscow. We’re going down to Kyiv. “We’re going to party and hang out with everyone,” said the singer.
Leto was criticized by Ukrainians on social networks after the video of his remarks went viral.
The Foreign Ministry stated that Leto “feeling the Russian energies” and his desire to perform in Russia is “an insult to those who sacrifice their lives to defend freedom.”
The ministry said that Russia cannot be appeased as long as it continues to try and solve the ‘problem,’ which is Ukraine’s very existence.
Leto and his team didn’t respond to the criticism.
The musician had performed in Ukraine and Russia prior to February 2022. He voiced his support for Ukraine after Russia’s full scale invasion.
Leto supported the Revolution of Dignity in 2013 and later visited Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Independence Square, in Kyiv where protests were held to pay tribute to “Heavenly Hundred”, the activists who died during the revolution.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that “there can be no appeasement of Russia” if it continues to try and solve the ‘problem,’ of Ukraine’s existence.
The EU’s new sanctions list includes individuals and entities that are responsible for the transfer of drones and rockets to Russia.
