**Baltic Countries to Impose Sanctions on Georgian Officials**
The governments of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have decided to impose national sanctions on individuals who suppressed legitimate protests in Georgia. This decision was announced by Gabrielius Landsbergis, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
According to Landsbergis, “opponents of democracy and violators of human rights are not welcome in our countries.” The move is part of a growing international pressure on Georgian officials over their handling of recent elections and protests.
**US Sanctions Already in Place**
The United States has already imposed visa restrictions on individuals responsible for suppressing civil society and freedom of peaceful assembly in Georgia. In addition, two bills – the Georgian People’s Act and MEGOBARI – have been introduced in the US Congress to provide further measures against Georgian Dream party patron Bidzina Ivanishvili and his associates.
**EU Also Weighs Sanctions**
The European Parliament has also initiated a letter to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, urging the imposition of sanctions on Georgian officials responsible for election fraud and democratic backsliding. The move follows a resolution adopted by the European Parliament condemning Georgia’s worsening democratic crisis.
