Latvian Military Holds Surprise Exercises
The Latvian military held surprise exercises on December 17. The goal was to test and improve their procedures and combat readiness.
These exercises come at a time when there are increased tensions between NATO and Russia. Latvia, like other Baltic countries, has been on high alert since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
Latvia is one of the three Baltic states that make up Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. They have shared histories with Russian aggression and occupation. Latvia has a population of 1.8 million people, with a significant Russian minority living there.
The country borders Russia and Belarus, two countries closely tied to Russia’s interests in the region. Latvia has committed to providing military support to Ukraine at the level of 0.25% of its GDP each year.
Other Baltic states have also been preparing for potential conflict with Russia. Lithuania has blocked and fortified a bridge over the Nieman River that connects it to Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave. The country is also planning to relocate a quarter of its population in case of war.
In light of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia are reviewing their civil preparedness measures. The surprise exercises by the Latvian military are likely a response to these growing tensions with Russia.
