Latvia Takes a Stand Against Pro-Russian Messaging
A court in Latvia has sentenced a social media influencer to one year in prison. Dmitry Matayev, a TikTok content creator, was found guilty of promoting hate speech and supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The case started when the State Security Service (SDS) arrested Matayev on April 25th. They had been monitoring his social media activity for some time and took issue with his pro-Russian videos. Authorities say that Matayev “expressed support for Russia and the war in Ukraine” and made aggressive comments about Latvians who supported Ukraine.
Matayev was previously warned by SDS officials in August 2023 to stop making such comments. However, he continued to create content on TikTok and Telegram, where he complained about alleged “linguistic genocide against Russians“.
The court considered Matayev’s time in detention since April 25th as part of his sentence. He will serve the remaining six months of his one-year prison term.
This case shows that Latvia is taking a firm stance against hate speech and pro-Russian propaganda on social media. The government has made it clear that such activity will not be tolerated, and those who engage in it can expect to face consequences.
