Baiba Braze, the Foreign Minister of Latvia, discusses her country‘s position on Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine and the need for a strong Ukrainian will to fight for its independence.
She emphasizes that having a clear stance by Western powers, particularly the US and Europe, in supporting Ukraine is crucial. They must demonstrate that they will continue to support Ukraine despite Russia’s attempts to take more territory.
Braze highlights that it’s essential to show that there is a will to fight, be free, and become members of the EU and NATO. She also notes that others will support Ukraine but ultimately, it’s a Ukrainian fight.
Regarding establishing a real hard deterrence against a repeat invasion, Braze doesn’t rule out the possibility of boots on the ground if it becomes necessary to enforce a ceasefire or settlement that Ukraine is satisfied with. However, she emphasizes that this is not a decision for her country at present.
She stresses that without Ukraine’s leadership, will, and standing for itself, no one else can replace that. The international community must support Ukraine in its fight for independence but ultimately, it’s up to the Ukrainian people to determine their future.
Braze also touches on Russia’s apparent conviction that they need to take more territory to strengthen their position, despite their economic problems and internal situation being in turmoil.
