The President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevičs, has called for an urgent and firm response from the European Union to the situation in Georgia. He believes that by suspending Georgia’s candidate status, the EU can send a strong message to the Georgian government and prevent the situation from deteriorating further. Rinkevičs made this statement at the Riga StratCom Dialogue 2024 international conference.
According to Rinkevičs, if the EU only expresses verbal concerns without taking concrete action, the situation in Georgia will only worsen. He urged the Georgian government to listen to the wishes of its society and not to be influenced by external forces that could hinder the country’s democratic development. The President of Latvia also emphasized that his country will continue to support Georgia, but only if it upholds the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The recent sanctions imposed by the EU on Georgian government officials have sparked controversy and debate. Some believe that these sanctions are necessary to address the current political crisis in the country, while others argue that they are a mistake and will only harm Georgia’s relationship with its main partner, the EU. Regardless, it is clear that the situation in Georgia requires immediate attention and action from both the Georgian government and the EU.
