The Turkish outlet Hurriyet reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticised Turkey’s provision of military equipment to Ukraine in order to help it combat Russia’s full scale invasion.
While Turkey is a NATO country, Turkish President Recep T. Tayyip Erdoan has still sought to maintain positive relationships with both Russia as well as Ukraine.
Lavrov expressed gratitude to the Turkish Government “for facilitating a settlement of the Ukrainian Crisis,” mentioning in particular the talks between Kyiv & Moscow in Istanbul, in March 2022. These talks were abandoned after Ukrainians retook control of the north of the nation and mass war crimes discovered in the liberated zones.
The Russian Foreign Minister criticized Turkey’s support for Ukraine in the war through the supply of military equipment.
Lavrov said that this “cannot help but surprise” given the Turkish leadership’s statements about their willingness to mediate between Ukraine & Russia.
Erdogan has publicly backed Ukrainian sovereignty and his administration has provided significant aid to Ukraine ever since Russia’s full scale invasion began. Ankara has also been trying for a long time to play a leading role during the peace negotiations between Kyiv, and Moscow.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on a large scale, the Turkish government has also helped the Kremlin circumvent EU sanctions by facilitating the flow of Russian crude oil into the EU.
Ankara will be the largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels in 2023. It will import around 42.2 billion euro ($45.9billion) worth of oil, natural gas and coal. This is a fivefold rise over the last decade.
The Financial Times (FT), on October 22, reported that Turkey had quietly stopped the export of U.S. military goods to Russia after a warning by Washington.
