Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Visits EU Country for First Time Since Ukraine Invasion
Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has traveled to Malta. This is his first visit to an EU country since Russia started fighting in Ukraine in February 2022.
Lavrov was last in an EU nation in 2021, when he attended a meeting of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Stockholm. He also went to New York several times during the war to attend meetings at the United Nations.
Despite being banned from traveling to many EU countries because of Russian sanctions, Lavrov was allowed to go to Malta because it’s an international meeting. Normally, people under these sanctions are not allowed into the EU.
The visit is causing controversy. The Maltese government canceled a visa for Maria Zakharova, who works with Russia’s Foreign Ministry. She said this was done “because of circumstances beyond our control.”
Lavrov plans to talk with foreign ministers from other countries about the war in Ukraine and how it should end. He will also promote a peace plan that he says is fair and just.
